This month’s Research Update highlights our book chapter Learning about Dolphins: An Era of Discovery in Managed Care, published in the Scientific Foundation of Zoos and Aquariums: Their Role in Conservation and Research. Zoos and aquariums have evolved from relatively rudimentary displays to reputable research and conservation organizations. Most modern zoological facilities conduct and facilitate basic and applied research, and many of these investigations cross discipl... Read More

Happy Spring! No really – it’s been a great Spring season and we are loving every minute of it. We are proud to share with you that for the past month and a half, we connected with over 2,000 people at our facility headquarters! To say we have been busy is an understatement, but it has been a great feeling to connect so many people to our dolphin family and share our message of marine conservation. Spring is characterized by new life and change, and this particular spring sea... Read More

Wild Dolphin of the Month For our Dolphin of the Month in February, we are featuring BEAR, the 48th dolphin we added to our photo-ID catalog. BEAR is presumed to be a female, as we have seen her interacting closely with calves, and she was named for the outline of the top of her dorsal fin (which resembles a bear). She has been sighted five times between oceanside and bayside at the northern end of our survey area in Key Largo        January 2021 – Field Notes ... Read More

Greetings, everyone! Based on the weather forecasts and news coverage I’ve seen the past couple of weeks, I sure am glad we’re located in the Florida Keys! Not to rub it in if you are reading this from somewhere cold, but we’ve had some perfect weather this month – not too hot, not too cold… the perfect weather for swimming with dolphins. ;) Speaking of swimming with dolphins, I’m happy to report that we have enjoyed a busier-than-usual February and hav... Alfonz – February is a month of love and Alfonz has been our very own Cupid this month! For the past few weeks, he has been very flirtatious with the other dolphins and has been showing off his best selection of creative behaviors to impress the ladies.  If you remember last month’s “From the Pod,” you know that Alfonz was working on his deep-water program behaviors. This month, he has been participating in these behaviors with guests and is doing a fantastic jo... Read More

How many plastic bags are there in the ocean?

Wednesday, February 17, 2021

Posted by DPMMR Staff at Wednesday, February 17, 2021
The simple answer is that there is an estimated 8 million metric tons of plastic in the ocean. To try to understand the enormous weight of this number, let’s compare it to other incredibly heavy items.  Amount of plastic in the ocean is approximately equal to:   53,445 blue whales (Assuming they were all full grown at 330,000 pounds)   4,008 full rocket ships (4.4 million pounds each, NASA average)   109 Washington Monuments (162 million pounds each, U....
