Nancy Cooper

President
nancyc@dpmmr.org

Biography:

Nancy graduated from Emory University in Atlanta, GA with a B.A. in Biology and Human and Natural Ecology (Co-Major). Later, she obtained a Masters of Professional Science (M.P.S.) degree from the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS). Her career at DPMMR originally began in 1998, when she was hired as a marine mammal trainer at Dolphins Plus Oceanside. Her previous roles included Dolphin Trainer, Animal Care & Training Supervisor, Director of Training, and now President. She also serves as a Lecturer for the University of Miami (RSMAS) for a semester-long graduate course (Marine Mammal Applied Behavior Analysis and Managed Care), offered and hosted three times per year at DPMMR. She is also a PADI certified Assistant SCUBA Instructor.

Nancy’s Story:

Hey guys! My name is Nancy and I am the President of DPMMR in sunny Key Largo, FL. While I moved around a lot as a child (Kentucky, Florida, Tennessee, Kansas, Georgia, and Kentucky again), I consider Miami, FL my hometown, as I spent much of my childhood at the beach. As a child, I had a strong passion for animals and the ocean and frequently dreamt of working with marine mammals and facilitating conservation. However, I was born in Lexington, KY, where there are no dolphins!! After multiple moves due to my father’s career, I graduated from Emory University in Atlanta, GA with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology and Human and Natural Ecology (Co-Major). During college, I acquired volunteer experience with The Dolphin Project, where I participated in a longitudinal wild bottlenose dolphin population study with Randy Wells, collecting data along the east coast of Georgia. Following graduation, I moved to Louisville, KY and worked for a few years as a Veterinary Technician/Assistant Office Manager at a 24-hour animal hospital. Then, I transitioned to working as a Veterinary Technician for a local equine veterinarian at Hermitage Farm, working with thoroughbred horses.

Finally, longing to work with dolphins, I sent my resume to Dolphins Plus Oceanside, flew down for a two-day interview, and in 1998 was hired to become a part of this amazing dolphin family. My experiences as a veterinary technician benefit me everyday, as ensuring and maintaining the health of our dolphin population is a crucial part of my job. After many years at Dolphins Plus, I decided to enter graduate school, as there is always more to learn about marine mammals (and yourself). Thus, in 2013, I obtained a Masters of Professional Science (MPS) degree in Marine Mammal Science from University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science.

I am thrilled to be a part of the birth and transition to the non-profit Dolphins Plus Marine Mammal Responder (DPMMR) and am elated to watch us grow. In addition to my dolphins "kids" and amazing team, I have a human child, Riley, who is my inspiration, my amazing husband, Art, and my furry, adopted child (canine), Jessie. Outside of marine mammal conservation, education, and management/development at DPMMR, I thoroughly enjoy painting, boating, and all things animal related. Today, I am lucky enough to call DPMMR my "happy place", as going to "work" doesn't feel much like working at all. Love what you do, do what you love, and trust that your experiences along the way are meant to be.

Hunter Kinney

Director of Fundraising, Marketing & Development
hunterk@dpmmr.org

Hey there! My name is Hunter and I am originally from Southern Kentucky. Although I grew up miles away from the nearest ocean, nothing could keep me from chasing my dream of becoming a marine mammal trainer!

My professional career with animals began in high school when I began working at a wildlife rehabilitation center. I worked with that organization for 7 years where I became the Executive Director and had the opportunity to develop the organization’s mission and outreach. Although I loved my time there, birds and small mammals couldn’t replace my love for dolphins, so I packed up and moved to Key Largo for our Animal Care & Training internship. Luckily, I was offered a position as a trainer at DPMMR at the end of my internship and I have been living my dream since that moment.

As a Senior Marine Mammal Specialist, I get to build relationships and care for our 8 dolphin ambassadors. Although I love teaching all kinds of new behaviors to the animals, my favorite behaviors to work on are the high energy and water-work behaviors. I love seeing how excited the animals get when they learn something new.

Not only do I get to work with the animals, in my Assistant-Director of Development role I get to work on advancing all aspects of our facilities mission. Being a part of our facility’s growth and development is very rewarding because the work DPMMR is doing for marine mammal conservation effects marine mammals and humans alike in every corner of the globe.

I’m so thankful to be a part of such an incredible organization and can’t wait for what the future holds for DPMMR.

Biography:

Dani became part of the DPMMR team in 2017, after graduating from the University of South Carolina with a B.S. in Marine Science and Biology. She began her journey as an Animal Care and Training intern and now is currently a Senior Marine Mammal Specialist.

Dani’s Story:

Hi! My name is Dani Hall and I’m a Senior Marine Mammal Specialist at Dolphins Plus Marine Mammal Responder. I’m originally from South Carolina and graduated with my B.S. in Marine Science and Biology from the University of South Carolina. My initial goal after graduation was to study cephalopods, specifically octopuses… little did I know I would fall in love with the training side of the marine field. The summer following graduation I completed an Animal Care and Training Internship at Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park in Fort Walton Beach, FL. I then moved to Key Largo, after accepting the Animal Care and Training Internship at DPMMR. Shortly after my internship began, I was offered a full-time trainer position. My answer was easily, “YES!”… and the rest is history. I absolutely love living in the keys and I’m so proud of my little family consisting of my husband and two dogs. There are no words to describe the relationships I have built with these dolphins and it truly is a privilege to work with them every day. When I’m not with the dolphins, you can usually find me hanging out with my two fur babies, Stanley and Winnie, reading, watching Survivor, or enjoying a bike ride!

Biography:

After completing her B.A. in Psychology at the University of West Florida, Kayla began her career with DPMMR. Kayla is now a Senior Marine Mammal Specialist and one of the Animal Care and Training Intern Coordinators.

Kayla’s Story:

Hey y’all! My name is Kayla and I grew up in Oldsmar, FL, where the Gulf of Mexico was my backyard. Growing up near the ocean allowed me to develop a love and passion for all animals, but especially marine mammals.

After graduation, I completed internships at Clearwater Marine Aquarium, Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium, Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo, and Dolphins Plus Oceanside. After a year and a half of internships and training with an array of animal species, I landed my dream job here at Dolphins Plus Marine Mammal Responder. Recognizing my own personal growth, as an individual, is one of the incredible aspects of my job each day. However, what I love more than watching myself grow, is mentoring others to achieve their professional goals and grow into future animal care trainers. At DPMMR, developing connections is our main objective. Everyday, I am blessed to connect our guests with these beautiful and majestic creatures, in hopes that my passion inspires individuals to protect their wild counterparts. As a marine mammal trainer, the connections and relationships I have developed with this dolphin family and with this staff are unexplainable, and gifts I will always treasure. While this organization may be very small, it is a big part of my heart and I’m happy to call this place my home.

Wendy Kellam

Senior Marine Mammal Specialist
wendyk@dpmmr.org

Biography:

Wendy received her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Kalamazoo College in Michigan. After completing a marine mammology class on site at Dolphins Plus, she began her career working with dolphins over 30 years ago.

Wendy’s Story:

HI! My name is Wendy Kellam and I'm a dolphin-aholic! Over 30 years ago, my parents brought me to Dolphins Plus to participate in a ten day marine mammalogy class. The rest?  History.  I really never left. Interspecies interaction has always intrigued me. Thus, I have over a decade of experience with Dolphin Assisted Therapy and have crewed and facilitated swims with humpback whales in the Dominican Republic and wild dolphins in the Bahamas. While I may now be referred to as a Dolphin Trainer/Marine Mammal Specialist, I see myself more as an "Interspecies Facilitator."  I continue to train humans to interact with the dolphins on their terms but also train dolphins to interact with our guests in DPMMR's Connect to Protect Program - our goal being to make all programs rewarding for humans AND dolphins.

During my first years at Dolphins Plus, I assisted with several mass Pilot Whales strandings in the Keys.  Thus, I was immediately indoctrinated into the world of marine mammal rescue, seeing the importance of being able to rescue, rehabilitate and/or release animals needing our help. I'm proud of our evolution to Dolphins Plus Marine Mammal Responder, as a not for profit organization supporting our rescue and rehabilitation efforts, research and education!

Originally, I am from Wilton, Connecticut and I graduated from Kalamazoo College in Michigan with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology.  I've always had a strong affinity for animals and behavior and have experience with animal assisted therapy with not only dolphins, but my ferrets, chinchillas, rabbits, guinea pigs and hedgehog as well.  When not working, you'll find me at home in Key Largo with my shar peis, Scrat and Denali.  I love reading, hiking, skiing, music, mountains, snow, forests and avocados....and my amazing friends, human and other.  Oh!  I also have an interest in alternative health, nutrition and am intrigued by the paranormal.

Marine Mammal Specialist / Intern Coordinator
jackyo@dpmmr.org

Biography:

Jacky began her career at DPMMR in 2021. She has an AA degree in Psychology and an AS degree in Exotic Animal Training and Management from Moorpark College. After graduation, Jacky worked at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom for three years training and caring for dolphins, seals, and sea lions. Now, Jacky works as a Marine Mammal Specialist here at DPMMR, working with our seven resident bottlenose dolphins.

Jacky's Story:

Hey guys! My name is Jacky and I'm one of the Marine Mammal Trainers here, at DPMMR. I moved here all the way from my home state of California, where I grew up in a small, mountain town, loving animals and begging for more pets! I was also always fascinated by the ocean and dreamt of living closer to the beach. Luckily, we frequently traveled to San Diego for our “beach fix”, and there, I visited SeaWorld. It was in those moments; I knew that my ideal dream job was to work with marine mammals. With this in mind, I worked towards this dream by studying psychology in college and volunteering at a nearby wildlife facility. After I finished my first degree, I gained more animal experience and then achieved a second degree through the Exotic Animal Training and Management program at Moorpark College. Within this program, I took many classes focused on all aspects of caring for and training animals, while simultaneously obtaining hands-on experience working at the zoo located on campus. Throughout those two years, I worked with a variety of animals including macaws, a lion, a baboon, and many more. Although I loved all of the species I worked with, my heart still longed for marine mammals. Happily, when I graduated the EATM program, I was lucky enough to achieve my marine mammal dream at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Northern California. Finally, my dreams became a reality and I was fortunate enough to work with dolphins, seals, and sea lions for three years. However, part of me still yearned to live near the ocean. Thus, when faced with the opportunity to work at an amazing organization, still work with dolphins, and live in the Florida Keys, I knew it was the perfect fit for me! So, my dog and I packed up my car and “road-tripped” across the country. I’m very excited to continue to do what I love, grow, learn more, and welcome seven new dolphins into my heart!

Biography:

Jenna began her career at DPMMR in 2019, after completing a B.S. in Marine Science and Biology at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, South Carolina. In addition to being a Marine Mammal Trainer, Jenna now leads the Volunteer Program and assists in our Research Department.

Jenna’s Story:

Hi y’all! My name is Jenna and I am one of the marine mammal trainers here at Dolphins Plus Marine Mammal Responder. I was born and raised in the little state of Rhode Island. Growing up where the ocean was only a few minutes away, I had a constant reminder of how important of our oceans are and felt passion for the marine life within.

I knew I had to pursue my dream of working alongside the ocean, so I packed up my life in Rhode Island and traveled to Conway, South Carolina for college. There, I enrolled at Coastal Carolina University, as it is well known for their marine science program, and graduated with my Bachelors Degree four years later.

After college, I moved even further away from home to the Florida Keys to continue my dream of working near the ocean. After completing the Animal Care and Training internship at DPMMR, I was offered the amazing opportunity of being hired on as a full-time trainer. My time here at DPMMR mainly consists of falling in love with this incredible organization that I now call home. I am happy to say that I have followed my dreams and get to wake up saying, I love my job.

Biography:

Kaylee began her career at DPMMR in April 2021, after completing a B.S. in Disciplinary Studies with concentrations in Biology and Psychology. Before moving to the Florida Keys, Kaylee owned and operated her own swim school that focused on teaching children with physical disabilities and learning challenges. Kaylee now is an Associate Trainer and continues her passion for teaching with our guests, while interacting with the dolphins.

Kaylee’s Story:

Hey there! My name is Kaylee and I was born and raised in Fargo, North Dakota; where winter is nine months long!

One Christmas, my parents surprised me with a trip to Mexico, where I had my first dolphin interaction. I remember looking at the trainer and thinking to myself, “I want to be a dolphin trainer when I grow up”. After that, I continued to study and learn about dolphins on my own accord and in every spare moment. Throughout my career, every job I acquired had two things in common, the water and teaching. Due to my vast experience as an educator, becoming a swim instructor was a perfect fit for me. Eventually, I opened my own Swim School and primarily taught children with learning challenges and disabilities. My teaching style always included innovative techniques for children learning how to swim, and now I express my creative teaching style training dolphins new behaviors!

After 14 months of marine mammal training internships, working with the United States Navy Marine Mammal Fleet in San Diego, California and at Dolphin Quest in Bermuda, the hard work never felt like work, as it resulted in my dream job. I am so lucky to wake up every morning and spend my days at work with the best human and dolphin family on the planet.

Photo ID Lab Manager

Biography:

After completing her Masters of Professional Science (M.P.S.) in Marine Mammal Science at the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, Nicole began her career with DPMMR in 2019. Prior to her role at DPMMR, she completed internships with various Photo ID organizations. Now, Nicole manages DPMMR’s Photo ID catalog and relevant research.

Nicole’s Story:

I grew up in cold and snowy Wisconsin, where I completed my B.S. in Marine Biology and Freshwater Ecology at the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater, a small school in the middle of nowhere and surrounded by farm fields. As you can imagine, there’s not much ocean in Wisconsin, so I completed an undergraduate research project on the genetics of aquatic plant species, and spent my summers conducting aquatic plant surveys throughout the state with a lake management company.

This gave me valuable field research and boating experience which I would later use for Photo ID. After graduation, I moved from aquatic plants into the marine mammal research field and got an internship conducting manatee Photo ID research. At the same time, I had been accepted into the Master of Professional Science (MPS) degree program at the University of Miami and completed my MPS degree in Marine Mammal Science in 2019. I accepted a position as the Photo ID program’s first intern and was fortunate enough to be hired at the completion of my internship.

Currently, I manage all the data entry and photo processing for the photo ID catalog. Helping to build this photo ID program from the ground up has been an extremely rewarding experience, and I can't wait to see how it grows! I am excited to continue sharing the importance of this research with our guests and the public!

Andrea Wood

Office Manager & Supervisor
andreaw@dpmmr.org

Biography:

Andrea began her career at DPMMR in November of 2018. Prior to her position here, she worked as a PADI Dive Instructor and Guest Service Representative at a local dive shop in Key Largo, FL. Andrea is now the Office Manager and the Group Coordinator for the DPMMR team.

Andrea’s Story:

Hi everyone! Growing up in Southern Missouri, I never thought I would end up working at a dolphin facility! I attended the University of Missouri - Columbia and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in History. While there, I found a love for diving and the ocean. I joined the dive club and took a NAUI Advanced Open Water course during my last semester of college. It was this class that inspired me to pursue a career focused around the ocean. After graduation, my goal was to obtain a Master’s degree in Underwater Archaeology, but I wanted to take a year off to complete two internships, one being a dive instructor internship right here in Key Largo!

Long story short, I met my (now) husband during the internship and we decided to settle down in Key Largo. After two years working at the dive shop, I received an opportunity to join the DPMMR team! I jumped on it immediately and never looked back! I have met incredible people (and dolphins) through this facility and have learned so much during my time here. Even though I am far from my original plan, I love how things turned out. I mean, I get to see dolphins every day! You never know what the day is going to bring and that is the best part of working at DPMMR, by far!

Dougie Long

Facility Maintenance Manager
dougie@dpmmr.org

Biography:

After his position in the Navy for seven years and as a SCUBA instructor for a local dive company for 2.5 years, Dougie began his role at DPMMR in May of 2019. He is now the Facility Maintenance Manager and Guest Services Representative for DPMMR.

Dougie’s Story:

Hey everyone! My name is Dougie Long and I am originally from North Carolina, but spent my summers in the Florida Keys. Thus, being around water always seemed more natural to me than being on land.

My professional career began in 2008 when I joined the Navy and trained to become a Fleet Marine Force (FMF) Corpsman. Following training, I was deployed to South Korea and then Afghanistan with 3rd Battalion 5th Marines, Kilo company 1st platoon. After spending seven years in the medical field, I was medically retired from the Navy in 2015. Subsequently, I moved to Key Largo to become a scuba instructor and diving became an integral part of my life. One of the highlights of my career in the dive industry was frequently observing dolphins surf in the wake of the boat on our way to and from dive sites. Although I thoroughly enjoyed my two and a half years of diving, teaching, and administrative work, one day an opportunity presented itself at DPMMR. Following an interview and a visit to DPMMR, I was hired as a Guest Services Representative and embarked on a different path.

Over the last few years, I have grown within the company, expanded my skills, and was recently promoted to Facility Maintenance Manager. I feel truly blessed to work at DPMMR and absolutely love my role within the company. My position is a perfect fit because I’m a “Jack-of-All-Trades” and my workday is extremely variable. There are no two workdays alike and I never know what the day will bring. My job includes repairing anything that is broken or damaged, assisting in remodeling and developing the facility, furthering the staff in their SCUBA certifications, assisting guests with dolphin reservations, busting out my sewing skills for the staff before important social events, and, best of all, I get to hang out with dolphins at work. This job fuels me, both mentally and physically, and is an unexpected dream come true.

Alecia Wengert

Assistant Manager
aleciaw@dpmmr.org

Biography:

Alecia initially joined the DPMMR team as a volunteer in January, 2020.  She was then hired as a part-time guest services staff member in April, 2021.  Originally from Pennsylvania, Alecia has 37 years of experience in office management, IT, payroll, and accounting.  She also maintains the important roles of being wife to Bill and mother to Michael and Julia.

Alecia’s Story:

Working for DPMMR is the dream job that I never even dared to dream!  I came here to swim with dolphins because I was told about a special offer.  After four visits within the next two months, I learned that DPMMR was a very special place and I HAD to work here!  I have visited other dolphin facilities in the past, but I fell in love with DPMMR’s not-for-profit status, mission of rescuing wild dolphins and whales, and staff (not to mention the dolphins!)

I enjoy talking with our guests on the phone and in person, helping them plan their experiences, sharing information and answering all of their questions.  When I first started, I would get teary-eyed and choked up when giving educational tours or briefings.  But with experience and training, I can now interact with guests without crying!  I also love photographing the sessions and then watching how delighted the participants are as they happily re-live their experiences.  Working a more active and social job in the Florida sunshine is a far cry from a desk job in Pennsylvania and I love every minute of it!

Biography:

Carla joined the DPMMR team as a part of our Guest Services / Photography department in 2022 after making the move from the hospitality industry in Miami to work around animals and animal lovers in sunny Key Largo.

Carla's Story:

Hi there reader! My name is Carla and I was born and raised in the heart of Miami Florida where there is lots of fun in the sun, waves, good music, and flavorful food. I've been a creative, compassionate individual my whole life and an avid animal lover. Being a part of the DPMMR team allows me to have the perfect outlet to be able to work amongst others who share the same affinities.

Back in 2021, I experienced an interactive program at DPMMR and that is when I first became intrigued with the idea of working around these amazing animals. Although I’ve only recently joined our Guest Services team, my time so far here has been nothing short of remarkable and inspiring.

I have recently moved my family to the upper Keys to explore different working opportunities away from the main city. Having left the hospitality industry, I landed here at DPMMR and could not be happier with the outcome.

DPMMR has facilitated an ideal work environment for me, has allowed me to cultivate special connections with both humans and dolphins, and welcomed me warmly to their little family. This facility is a stupendous institution and I couldn’t be more happy to be a part of this team, and to watch the dolphins live their best lives.

Biography:

Maureen began working at DPMMR in 2019 after completing a B.S. in Conservation Biology at North Carolina State University. Prior to her position here, Maureen worked with various stranding organizations, including facilities located in North Carolina, Mississippi, and Alabama. Additionally, Maureen works with the DPMMR Rescue and Research teams, as well as in our Guest Services department.

Maureen’s Story:

Hi! My name is Maureen and I am originally from Charlotte, North Carolina. My elementary school mascot was a dolphin and, growing up, people used to tell me that I should become a “Maureen” biologist. I thought it was a terrible joke but look at me now!

Originally, I attended N.C. State to pursue a pre-veterinary track, but after spending my sophomore spring semester at Duke Marine Lab, I knew marine science was my passion. After completing my first internship with the North Carolina Marine Mammal Stranding Network, I was hooked! I went on to complete two other stranding internships, one in Mississippi and the other in Alabama. I came to DPMMR by way of the Manatee Research internship at Mote Marine Lab. Once that concluded, I packed up my bags, headed to the Keys and haven’t looked back since!

It is a pleasure to watch DPMMR’s growth over the years, from a tiny, newly named facility to a very successful non-profit organization! I love not only working with the wild dolphin population here in the Upper Keys, but also with our seven resident dolphins here at DPMMR; it truly is the best of both worlds!

Biography:

Alexis joined the DPMMR team in 2021 as a volunteer. From there, she accepted a full-time position with our Guest Services team/Photo Department.

Alexis’s Story:

Hi everyone! My name is Alexis and I was born and raised down here in South Florida. I grew up with an affinity for water and a strong passion for animals, especially dolphins. What better way to spend my time at work than combining the two?

Although I’ve only recently joined our Guest Services team, it has been nothing less than extraordinary. In 2018, I experienced an interactive program at DPMMR and first fell in love with the idea of working with these amazing animals. However, I never fathomed I would be able to call this place home. In February of 2021, I joined our volunteer program, which created many opportunities for me.

Currently, I am still in school earning my Bachelors degree in Psychology, but am hoping to one day put that degree to use, working directly with marine mammals in the training field. Along my journey, DPMMR has facilitated amazing friendships, both human and dolphin, highlighting the fact that this facility is one big family. I couldn’t be happier with where I am today and to watch this organization grow. It really is a dream come true to be able to work here at DPMMR, as I take one step closer to achieving my dream job!
